About Flink
Apache Flink is a framework and distributed processing engine for stateful computations over unbounded and bounded data streams. It has been designed to run in all common cluster environments, perform computations at in-memory speed and at any scale.
Flink provides correctness guarantees including exactly-once state consistency, event-time processing, and sophisticated late data handling. It offers layered APIs such as SQL on stream and batch data, DataStream API, and ProcessFunction for time and state.
Key features
- Exactly-once state consistency
- Event-time processing
- Sophisticated late data handling
- Layered APIs including SQL, DataStream API, and ProcessFunction
- Flexible deployment and high-availability setup
- Scale-out architecture with support for very large state and incremental checkpoints
Good fit for
- Event-driven applications that ingest events from event streams and react with computations, state updates, or external actions
- Stream and batch analytics for real-time continuous queries or traditional batch queries on bounded data
- Data pipelines and ETL to convert and move data between storage systems
Flink: questions and answers
- What is Flink used for?
- Flink is a framework and distributed processing engine for stateful computations over unbounded and bounded data streams, designed to run in all common cluster environments. It is a good fit for event-driven applications that ingest events from event streams and react with computations, state updates, or external actions; stream and batch analytics for real-time continuous queries or traditional batch queries on bounded data; and data pipelines and ETL to convert and move data between storage systems.
- Is Flink open source?
- Yes. Flink is open source under the Apache-2.0 licence. Its source code is on GitHub at apache/flink and is written mainly in Java.
- Is Flink free?
- Yes. Flink is open source, so the software itself is free to use.
- Can I self-host Flink?
- Yes. Flink can be self-hosted on your own server or infrastructure.
- What is Flink an alternative to?
- Flink is an open-source alternative to Matillion, Talend, Tinybird and Confluent. Other open-source alternatives to Matillion include Apache Spark, Kafka and Airflow.
- Is Flink actively maintained?
- Yes. The most recent commit to Flink was on 13 October 2026. The project has 26k stars on GitHub.
