About Rundeck

Rundeck is an open-source runbook automation service, now maintained by PagerDuty. It provides a browser console, command-line tools and an HTTP API for standardizing operational tasks and running them across a set of nodes, which helps teams improve consistency and reduce manual steps.

A common goal is self-service operations: giving specific users controlled access to existing tools, services and scripts rather than raw server access. It can execute workflows across existing automation, schedule jobs, orchestrate tools such as Ansible and keep audit records of who ran what. Packages are provided as Deb, RPM and WAR downloads, and the application is written in Groovy and Java.

The community edition is licensed under Apache-2.0 and can be installed on your own servers. PagerDuty also sells commercial runbook automation products based on it. Rundeck suits operations and SRE teams that want to put approved procedures behind a controlled interface.
