n8n is a workflow automation platform for connecting apps, moving data between them and triggering actions without writing a full integration from scratch. Workflows are built on a visual canvas, and when a step needs more logic you can drop in JavaScript or Python and use npm packages. It is often compared with Zapier and Make, but the source is public and it can run on your own infrastructure.

Recent versions put a lot of weight on AI. You can build multi-step agents and LLM workflows that call OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or open-source models, add human approval steps, and inspect what happened afterward. The project advertises over a thousand integrations and a large library of ready-made workflow templates, and you can extend it with your own nodes.

n8n is distributed under a fair-code model: the Sustainable Use License, plus a separate enterprise license for additional features. The code is always visible and can be self-hosted, for example with Docker, but it is not an OSI-approved open-source license, so commercial redistribution is restricted. A managed cloud edition is available if you would rather not run it yourself.

Key features

  • Visual workflow canvas with branching logic
  • JavaScript and Python code steps with npm packages
  • Multi-step AI agents with human approval
  • Over 1,500 integrations plus reusable templates
  • Connects to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or local models
  • Role-based access and audit trails
  • Self-hosting with Docker or managed cloud

Pricing: Free self-hosted Community Edition. Hosted plans cost 20€ (Starter), 50€ (Pro) and 667€ (Business) per month billed annually, scaled by workflow executions; Enterprise is custom. Free trial available.

StackStorm is an open-source platform that connects the tools in your infrastructure and runs automated actions when events occur. Nicknamed 'IFTTT for Ops', it targets DevOps and site reliability teams who want to automate remediation, incident response, troubleshooting and deployments instead of handling every alert by hand.

It combines a rules engine that matches incoming events, workflows that chain several actions together, and ChatOps so operators can trigger and follow automation from chat. A catalog of integration packs, about 160 according to the project description, supplies more than 6,000 ready-made actions for common tools, and you can add your own. The project provides an installer script for a clean 64-bit Linux server.

StackStorm is Apache-2.0 licensed software that you run on your own Linux hosts. It suits operations teams building event-driven runbooks who prefer to self-host, and community help is available through a forum and a Slack group.

Key features

  • Event-driven rules engine
  • Multi-step workflows across tools
  • Triggering automation from chat via ChatOps
  • Integration packs with thousands of actions
  • Auto-remediation and incident response runbooks
  • Custom actions written in Python or shell

Pricing: Free and open source under the Apache-2.0 license.

Tracecat is open-source software for automating security operations, used by teams and AI agents together. It aims to give security teams everything they need to build agents and automate cyber defense in one place, from alert handling to incident response, with unlimited agents, cases, lookup tables and workflows.

Its building blocks include agents and skills built from prompts, tools and MCP, case management for tracking and resolving incidents with agent help, workflows that execute deterministic logic with resilience on Temporal, tables for storing and querying structured data, and a Tracecat MCP that turns prompts into automations from Claude Code, Codex and similar tools. The stack is Python with FastAPI and a Next.js interface.

Tracecat is licensed under AGPL-3.0 and can be self-hosted, with a managed cloud also offered by the vendor. It suits security operations, detection engineering and incident response teams that want a programmable, AI-ready alternative to proprietary SOAR tools.

Key features

  • AI agents with prompts, tools and MCP
  • Case management for incidents
  • Workflows running on Temporal
  • Tables for structured data lookups
  • Tracecat MCP for prompt-driven automation
  • Unlimited agents, cases and workflows

Pricing: The open-source edition is free to self-host with no execution limits. Enterprise is priced by quote and scales with usage, deployment model and support needs.
