About OpenKap

OpenKap is a screen recorder that runs as a Chrome extension. You choose a capture area, start recording, and when you stop it hands you a link you can paste into Slack, Notion, Linear or email, so teammates can watch on their own time instead of joining a meeting. It presents itself as a free, open source alternative to Loom.

Besides video, it includes a screenshot editor for annotating, highlighting and cropping images before they are shared. Recordings get AI-generated transcriptions, and viewers can leave comments. An MCP server lets Claude Code or any other MCP-compatible tool read a shared video's transcription, summary and team comments, so you can ask questions about a recording from your editor.

The code is published on GitHub and the project describes itself as self-hostable, with a hosted version available as well. The free plan covers 5 recordings of up to 5 minutes each, and a Pro plan at $8 per month removes the limits on recording count and length.
