About Weave Scope
Weave Scope was a monitoring and visualization tool for containerized, microservices-based applications running on Docker, Kubernetes, ECS or Mesos. It automatically generated a map of an application's processes, containers and hosts, intended to help operators intuitively understand and troubleshoot systems made of many interconnected services.
It let users view an overview of the whole container infrastructure or drill into a specific microservice, showing contextual metrics, tags and metadata and letting users navigate from processes to the containers and hosts they ran on through expandable, sortable tables. From within the tool, operators could pause, restart or stop containers and launch a command line without leaving the browser, and the project supported plugins to add custom details or interactions.
Weave Scope is written in Go and was released under the Apache-2.0 license. The README states plainly that the project is no longer maintained, so while it remains available to self-host via a Docker Hub image, teams evaluating new tools should look at actively maintained alternatives for container observability.

Weave Scope: questions and answers
- What is Weave Scope used for?
- Weave Scope was an Apache-licensed, now-deprecated tool that automatically mapped Docker and Kubernetes applications for real-time monitoring and container management. It is a good fit for visualizing microservice architecture on Kubernetes and troubleshooting containerized applications.
- Is Weave Scope open source?
- Yes. Weave Scope is open source under the Apache-2.0 licence. Its source code is on GitHub at weaveworks/scope and is written mainly in Go.
- Is Weave Scope free?
- Yes. Weave Scope is open source, so the software itself is free to use.
- Can I self-host Weave Scope?
- Yes. Weave Scope can be self-hosted on your own server or infrastructure; there is no official hosted version.
- What are some alternatives to Weave Scope?
- Similar open-source tools in the Monitoring & Observability category include cAdvisor, Dozzle and Pulse. SaaS products in the same category include Groundcover, IBM Instana and Sematext.
- Is Weave Scope actively maintained?
- The most recent commit to Weave Scope was on 7 July 2023, and the latest release is v1.13.2, published on 9 April 2021. The project has 5.9k stars on GitHub.
