About RetroArch
RetroArch is the reference frontend for libretro, an API that exposes generic audio, video and input callbacks. Emulators, game engines and other programs are packaged as dynamic libraries called libretro cores, and RetroArch loads them and handles video output, audio output, input and the application lifecycle for them.
Because a core written in portable C or C++ needs little porting work, the same emulator can run on many platforms through the frontend. RetroArch is meant to stay small and portable while keeping the core features people expect from an emulator, with a gamepad-centric and touchscreen interface and a full command-line mode. Related projects supply shaders and helper scripts for building cores.
The program is written in C and licensed under GPL-3.0. Binaries are published on the project's build server, and help is available through GitHub issues, a forum, Discord and a documentation center. Man pages are provided on Unix systems. Other projects also use the libretro interface to support emulators and engines.
