About Cryptgeon
Cryptgeon is an open-source service for sharing secret notes and files, inspired by PrivNote. It includes a server, a web page and a command-line client, and the idea is that you send sensitive text or files through a link that stops working after it has been viewed or after a time limit.
Each note gets a generated id and key. The note is encrypted in the browser with XChaCha20-Poly1305 before it is sent, the id is used to store and retrieve it, and the server never sees the key, so it cannot read the content. Data lives only in memory and is never written to disk. Views and expiry can be limited, dark mode is supported, and a Raycast extension exists.
The backend is written in Rust and the front end in Svelte, and the project is licensed under MIT. You can try the live service on the project website or self-host it, using a Redis or Valkey cache as the store. The README notes that view counts are only guaranteed when running a single instance, which matters for larger deployments.
