About Amazon S3
Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) is object storage from Amazon Web Services. Applications store and retrieve any amount of data over an API, with the service designed around scalability, availability, security and performance. AWS promotes it for data lakes, mobile applications, backup and restore, archival, IoT devices, machine learning, AI and analytics.
S3 is a core part of the AWS storage portfolio and works with other AWS services in analytics, AI and application workloads. Customers manage data in buckets through the AWS console, command line and SDKs, and can choose storage classes that fit different access patterns and cost needs.
Amazon S3 is a hosted commercial service with usage-based pricing described on the AWS S3 pricing page. It is available only on AWS, so it cannot be self-hosted, although AWS offers a free sign-up to get started.
