Best Time Tracking Software for Construction in 2026: Crew Clock-In, GPS Job Sites and Payroll Export

Best time tracking software for construction and contractors: Hubstaff, Jibble, Connecteam, Clockify, JobTread and Frappe HR, compared on GPS and payroll.

By , founder of NQM Studio LTDUpdated 9 min read

The best time tracking software for construction is the one your crew will actually use on site, with each clock-in tied to a job. Hubstaff and Jibble both list GPS-based clock-in, Connecteam suits crews that also need schedules, forms and checklists, and JobTread suits contractors who want hours inside their job costing.

Enlisted has no open-source time tracker built for job sites, so this guide covers hosted crew tools first and says plainly what the open-source options do and do not cover. Picks are grouped by job: GPS clock-in, all-in-one crew apps, construction management suites, small-contractor tools and self-hosted options. Live pricing is in the table and the "Pricing compared" section, so no prices appear in the text.

What should time tracking software for construction do?

A construction crew works away from a desk, often in places with weak signal, and hours have to reach payroll and job costs. The vendors' own pages point to five requirements:

  • Clock-in at the site. Hubstaff lists geofenced job sites that start and stop timers when a worker enters or leaves, and Jibble lists geofencing that limits clock-in to the site boundary.
  • Working without signal. Jibble says clock-ins, GPS and geofencing keep working offline and sync later.
  • Shared devices. Jibble and Clockify list kiosk modes, so a crew can share a phone or tablet at the site.
  • Hours tied to jobs. Jibble assigns hours to projects, Clockify lets crews log time against projects, and JobTread ties time to job costing.
  • A route to payroll. Jibble exports XLS or CSV and sends timesheet data to QuickBooks, Xero and Deel, Hubstaff turns approved hours into payments, and actiTIME and TrackingTime describe payroll-ready timesheets.

How we picked

Each tool is included because its own description or Enlisted's data connects it to field crews, contractors, construction, GPS clock-in or job costing. We left out candidates that are not timekeeping, such as estimating apps and jobsite task trackers. Fieldwire and Procore are construction platforms whose listings describe tasks, plans, quality and finance and do not mention time tracking, and CMiC is construction ERP whose listing does not name timesheets, so confirm with those vendors if you already use them. For how listings are ranked, see how Enlisted ranks tools.

Best for GPS clock-in on job sites

Hubstaff: best for automatic clock-in by job site

Hubstaff is a time tracking and workforce management platform whose GPS job sites clock people in and out automatically when they enter or leave a custom geofenced area. It also produces timesheets from tracked time, handles attendance, shifts and time off, and turns approved hours into payments. The vendor names field teams and construction among the mobile workforces it serves.

The product also includes activity tracking with optional screenshots and idle detection, so decide whether you want those switched on for field crews.

  • Best for: contractors with several job sites who want timers to start and stop by location.
  • Watch out for: there is no free plan (a trial is offered), pricing is per seat, and the vendor's GPS page does not mention offline tracking, so ask how it behaves on sites with poor signal.

Jibble: best for geofenced clock-in with offline and kiosk modes

Jibble is a time tracking and attendance app with timesheets, a mobile time clock, GPS tracking, face recognition and PTO management. Its construction page lists geofencing, a shared kiosk at the job site, offline clock-ins that sync when signal returns, hours assigned to projects, automatic break and overtime calculation, and exports to QuickBooks, Xero and Deel.

The vendor markets it as free time tracking software with a free-forever plan, so a small crew can try it without a contract.

  • Best for: small and mid-sized contractors that want GPS, offline recording and a kiosk with a free starting point.
  • Watch out for: it also lists employee monitoring with screenshots, so check you can switch off anything your crew would object to, and confirm current plan limits on the vendor's site.

Clockify: best for a free timesheet with location view and kiosk

Clockify is a time tracker and timesheet tool with a timer, timesheets, kiosk mode, reports, billable rates, approvals and time off, available as web, desktop and mobile apps. Its construction page lists location tracking that shows the current or last known position of field workers and the worksites they visited, and projects against which crews log time.

The free plan has no cap on users.

  • Best for: small contractors that want free timesheets, project-based hours and a view of where crews have been.
  • Watch out for: the construction page does not mention geofencing, offline use or overtime, so confirm those with the vendor if you rely on them.

Best for crews that need more than a time clock

Connecteam: best all-in-one mobile app for deskless crews

Connecteam is a mobile-first app for deskless teams that combines a time clock, scheduling, forms and checklists, task management, chat and HR tools. The vendor names construction and field service crews among its audiences, and the app replaces a mix of chat apps, paper forms and spreadsheets.

An AI feature can build a schedule from a plain-language request. There is a free plan for small teams.

  • Best for: crews where daily checklists, safety forms, schedules and clock-in belong in one app.
  • Watch out for: it is organized into hubs priced separately, with a per-user charge beyond a set number of users, so check which hub includes the time clock and what your headcount costs.

Best when time tracking sits inside construction management

JobTread: best for hours inside estimating and job costing

JobTread is a construction estimating, scheduling and project management platform for contractors, with a CRM, job costing, invoicing and customer portals. Its feature list includes scheduling, daily logs, time tracking and forms, and the vendor targets home builders, remodelers, roofers and specialty and commercial contractors.

  • Best for: residential and specialty contractors that want hours, budgets and change orders in the same system as estimates and invoices.
  • Watch out for: it sells one plan with every feature plus a charge per additional internal user, no free plan or trial is listed, and its time tracking is one module rather than a dedicated crew clock.

Trimble Viewpoint: best for contractors already on a construction ERP

Trimble Viewpoint is a suite of construction ERP, accounting, HR and field management software that includes Vista and Spectrum. Each ERP has a companion HR product covering payroll timesheets and time off, and Vista has a field management product that links crews on site to the ERP and replaces paper processes.

  • Best for: larger contractors that want field hours to flow into job costing and accounting.
  • Watch out for: pricing is by quote, and it is an ERP rollout rather than a standalone timesheet app.

Mudur.OS: best for French-speaking trades companies

Mudur.OS is French construction management software for quotes, invoices, team scheduling and site hours, photos and documents, used from the office and from the field. Hours sent from the field stay attached to the right site. The vendor offers a 30-day free trial with no bank card.

  • Best for: French-speaking building and trades companies managing several sites.
  • Watch out for: the site is in French, and the vendor's description does not mention GPS clock-in or payroll exports.

Best for small contractors paying by the day or by the unit

Puantaj Defteri: best iPhone and iPad app for daily and per-unit wages

Puantaj Defteri, listed on the App Store as Timesheet Payroll Tracker, is an iPhone and iPad app for tracking work hours, attendance, wages and overtime. It targets small businesses, construction companies and daily workers, with full-day, half-day and absence marks, calendar-based entry, and pay calculations for daily wages, overtime, commission and unit, kilogram, square-meter or trip-based work. Reports export as PDF.

  • Best for: very small contractors that pay daily wages or piece rates and have replaced paper sheets or Excel.
  • Watch out for: it runs on Apple devices only, the listed features are entry-based rather than crew clock-in, and GPS is not mentioned.

actiTIME: best for timesheets, budgets and payroll prep in the office

actiTIME is a time tracking and timesheet product where employees log hours against projects and tasks, and managers use the data for budgets, billing, payroll and comparing actual effort with estimates. It lists leave management, approval workflows and integrations with QuickBooks and Zapier, and it can be self-hosted under a licence sold as a one-time purchase.

  • Best for: contractors whose office staff compile weekly timesheets and want actual-versus-estimate reports per project.
  • Watch out for: the listing does not name construction, and GPS or offline clock-in is not among the listed features.

Open-source and self-hosted options

No open-source tool here is a ready-made crew time clock. These two cover parts of the job and need setup.

Kimai: best open-source timesheet application

Kimai is an open-source (AGPL-3.0) web-based time tracking application with timesheets, reports, invoicing, multiple timers, a punch-in and punch-out mode, a JSON API and exports. It supports role and team permissions, sign-in through SAML or LDAP and a responsive design. You can self-host it, or use the vendor's hosted version.

  • Best for: a contractor with IT help that wants hours by customer and project on its own server.
  • Watch out for: GPS and a dedicated crew mobile app are not listed, so crews would enter time through the web interface.

Frappe HR: best open-source attendance and payroll system

Frappe HR is an open-source (GPL-3.0) HR and payroll system from the team behind ERPNext, covering leave, attendance with geolocation check-in, expense claims and payroll with salary structures and salary slips. A mobile app handles leave requests and check-ins. It is free to self-host, and managed hosting is sold per site.

  • Best for: contractors that want attendance with location check-in and payroll on software they control.
  • Watch out for: it records attendance rather than hours against jobs. ERPNext lists projects among its modules, but Enlisted's data does not say how the two connect, so test that before you commit.

What should contractors check before buying?

Two requirements decide most of these choices.

  1. How crews clock in at your sites. Decide whether you need GPS, geofencing, a shared kiosk or offline recording, then check the vendor's own pages for each. Jibble lists all four, Hubstaff lists GPS job sites, Clockify lists location tracking and a kiosk, and Turnozo, a shift scheduling app built for restaurants, hotels and similar teams, adds optional GPS checks but does not name construction. Also check whether monitoring features such as screenshots can be turned off.
  2. Where the hours go next. Check the export or integration against your payroll and accounting tools: Jibble names QuickBooks, Xero and Deel, actiTIME names QuickBooks, and JobTread and Trimble Viewpoint keep hours inside job costing. If your contracts require regulated payroll reports such as certified payroll, none of the listings or vendor pages checked for this guide mention them, so ask each vendor directly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time tracking software for construction?
For crews that clock in on site, Hubstaff and Jibble both list GPS-based clock-in, and Jibble also lists geofencing and offline recording. Connecteam suits crews that need schedules, forms and checklists with the time clock, and JobTread suits contractors who want hours inside job costing.
What is the best time tracking software for contractors?
Small contractors can start with Jibble or Clockify, which both have free plans, and add GPS features as crews grow. Contractors who pay daily or per-unit wages on iPhone or iPad can look at Puantaj Defteri, and those who want estimating and job costing in one product can look at JobTread.
Can construction workers clock in with GPS?
Yes, several tools support it. Hubstaff lists GPS job sites that clock people in and out, Jibble lists GPS tracking and geofencing so crews clock in only inside a site boundary, and Clockify lists location tracking for field workers. Check offline behavior if your sites have weak signal.
Is there free or open-source time tracking software for construction crews?
No open-source tool in Enlisted's catalogue is built for job-site crews. Kimai is an open-source timesheet application, and Frappe HR is an open-source HR system with attendance and geolocation check-in on its mobile app. Both need setup and neither is a ready-made construction time clock.
What should construction companies look for in a time tracking app?
Start with how crews clock in: GPS or geofencing, a shared kiosk, and whether it works offline. Then check that hours are tied to jobs, that overtime rules fit your payroll, and that the export reaches your payroll or accounting software.
