Penpot is an open-source design platform for teams building digital products. It runs in the browser or on your own servers, and its emphasis is ownership of the design infrastructure, which appeals to organizations with strict compliance or governance needs. It is often considered an open alternative to proprietary design tools such as Figma.

The platform uses open standards including SVG, CSS, HTML and JSON, so design files are closer to the code that implements them. Real-time collaboration lets designers and developers work together, and CSS Grid and Flex Layout let teams build responsive interfaces that behave like real layouts. Native design tokens act as a shared source of truth between design and development, which helps with larger design systems.

Penpot also exposes an open API and plugin system for automation and integrations, plus an MCP server for connecting AI workflows with design and code. It is written in Clojure and ClojureScript under the MPL-2.0 license, and a hosted version is available at penpot.app for teams that do not want to self-host.

Key features

  • Browser-based design and prototyping
  • Real-time team collaboration
  • Native design tokens
  • CSS Grid and Flex Layout support
  • Open API and plugin system
  • MCP server for AI-driven workflows
  • Self-hosting for full control of design data

Pricing: Professional is free. Unlimited is $7 per editor per month, capped at $175 per month, and Enterprise is $25 per member per month. Private Server is listed at $50k per year; paid plans have a 14-day trial.

Graphite is a free and open-source 2D content creation application, described as a procedural toolbox. It started life as a vector editor and is growing into a general graphics tool that handles both vector and raster work, with a nondestructive workflow in which layer-based compositing meets node-based generative design. It is currently in alpha.

The editor's tools are friendly wrappers around a node graph at its core, and the project says its architecture resembles a game engine more than a typical creative application. Further capabilities on the roadmap include VFX compositing, desktop publishing, digital painting, motion graphics and photo editing. Topics tag it as a graphics editor, SVG editor and procedural drawing tool, and it is written in Rust.

Graphite is Apache-2.0 licensed and community driven. Its website offers a newsletter, and volunteers and donors support the work. Because it is alpha software, features and file formats may change, which makes it more of an interesting project to follow and try than a drop-in replacement for mature design suites today.

Key features

  • Vector and raster graphics in one app
  • Node-based procedural graphics engine
  • Nondestructive layer-based compositing
  • Tools built on a node graph core
  • Roadmap for photo editing and motion graphics
  • Written in Rust

Pricing: Free and open source under the Apache-2.0 license.

TiXL, formerly Tooll3, is open-source software for creating real-time motion graphics. It sits between real-time rendering, node-graph procedural generation and linear keyframe animation, so artists get both generative flexibility and precise timeline control.

That combination lets artists build audio-reactive visuals for VJ performances, explore parameters through specialized interfaces, or blend keyframe animation with automation. Technical artists can go deeper and write fragment or compute shaders, or feed in input from MIDI controllers, sensors and sources such as OSC or Spout. The project is a .NET application built on DirectX 11 with an ImGui-based interface.

TiXL is licensed under MIT and runs on your own computer, with a website offering downloads and documentation. It is aimed at motion designers, VJs and creative coders who want a free alternative to commercial real-time graphics tools.

Key features

  • Node-based procedural graphics
  • Keyframe animation and timeline editing
  • Audio-reactive visuals for VJ content
  • Custom fragment and compute shaders
  • MIDI, OSC and Spout input
  • DirectX 11 real-time rendering

Pricing: Free and open source under the MIT license.

Poster Design, known in Chinese as Xunpai Design, is an open-source online image editor and poster designer that is ready to deploy. It is modeled on commercial template design tools and targets posters, e-commerce product images, long article images and covers for videos or WeChat official accounts. Its documentation is primarily in Chinese.

The editor uses a native DOM canvas, with images composed by a mix of front-end and server-side rendering, and ships with a complete admin back end and APIs. Version 2.0 adds free AI features for image generation, copywriting and background removal with brush touch-up, plus PSD file import to help create templates. The stack is Vue 3, Vite, Pinia and TypeScript on the front end, and Node.js with Express and an embedded SQLite database on the server, with Puppeteer and sharp for image output.

The code is licensed under AGPL-3.0. The authors also run a SaaS site and offer custom development and private deployment, so you can self-host or use the hosted version. It suits operators and developers who want to embed a design editor in their own product.

Key features

  • Native DOM canvas poster editor
  • Free AI image generation and copywriting
  • One-click AI background removal
  • PSD import for template creation
  • Admin back end and APIs included
  • Server-side image composition

Pricing: Open source under AGPL-3.0; a hosted SaaS site and paid custom deployment services are offered.

Ikuaitu, also published as vue-fabric-editor, is an open-source image and design editor that runs in the browser. It is built on fabric.js and Vue and focuses on a lightweight drag-and-drop workflow for posters and graphics instead of acting as a full online Photoshop replacement. The code is released under the MIT license and the documentation is mainly in Chinese.

The editor imports JSON and PSD files and exports PNG, SVG, and JSON. Its tools include layers, grouping, gradients, stroke and shadow settings, undo and redo, guides and rulers, alignment of multiple elements, arrows, lines, a drawing brush, polygons, QR codes and barcodes, image replacement, cropping, filters, and watermarks. Fonts, materials, and templates can be customized.

A plugin architecture allows extra features, context menus, and keyboard shortcuts to be added, and the interface supports internationalization. The project also lists commercial editions and a product-customization designer. It is aimed at developers who want to embed a design editor in their own product and at teams building template-based graphics tools.

Key features

  • Drag-and-drop canvas editing with layers
  • PSD and JSON import, PNG and SVG export
  • Custom fonts, materials, and design templates
  • Guides, rulers, and alignment tools
  • QR codes, barcodes, and watermarks
  • Plugin architecture for extensions
