About Scrutiny

Scrutiny is a hard drive health dashboard that builds a web interface on top of smartd and S.M.A.R.T data. It is aimed at people who run servers or storage with several drives and want to catch failing disks before they cause data loss.

The README explains the gaps it addresses. S.M.A.R.T exposes more than a hundred attributes without separating critical ones from informational ones, smartd keeps no history of how an attribute changes, manufacturer thresholds are sometimes unset or too lenient, and smartd offers only a command line. Scrutiny merges manufacturer-provided metrics with real-world failure rates, shows a dashboard focused on critical metrics, detects connected drives automatically and tracks metrics over time.

Scrutiny is written in Go and released under the MIT licence. The README notes that it is a work in progress with some rough edges, and it integrates with smartd rather than reimplementing S.M.A.R.T collection.

Key features

  • Web dashboard focused on critical drive metrics
  • smartd integration
  • Automatic detection of connected drives
  • Historical S.M.A.R.T metric tracking
  • Real-world failure rate thresholds

Good fit for

  • →Monitoring drive health on home servers
  • →Spotting degrading disks before failure
