About Amazon CloudFront

Amazon CloudFront is a content delivery network from Amazon Web Services. It caches static and dynamic content at AWS edge locations so that websites, APIs and media reach users with lower latency, while requests that miss the cache are forwarded to an origin such as an Amazon S3 bucket or a web server.

CloudFront integrates with other AWS services, including AWS WAF and AWS Shield for protection, AWS Certificate Manager for HTTPS certificates, and edge compute options such as CloudFront Functions and Lambda@Edge for customizing requests and responses. Distributions are configured through the AWS console, command line or APIs.

It is a managed, proprietary AWS service with no self-hosted version. It fits teams already running workloads on AWS who want content delivery, security and billing within the same cloud, while teams on other providers might weigh it against CDNs such as Cloudflare or Fastly.

Key features

  • Edge caching of static and dynamic content
  • Delivery of APIs and media streams
  • Integration with AWS WAF and Shield
  • HTTPS delivery with managed certificates
  • Edge functions with Lambda@Edge
  • Origins such as S3 buckets and web servers

Good fit for

  • →Accelerating a website hosted on AWS
  • →Distributing downloads and media files
  • →Running lightweight logic at the edge
