About OpenSpeedTest
OpenSpeedTest is a free, open-source network performance estimation tool that runs in a web browser. It is written in plain JavaScript and uses only built-in web APIs such as XMLHttpRequest, along with HTML, CSS and SVG, so no third-party frameworks or libraries are needed. The project began in 2011 and moved to its own domain in 2013.
Because it consists only of static HTML, CSS and JavaScript files, a speed test server can be created with a static web server such as Nginx, Apache, IIS or Express, and the project argues this removes concerns about security updates for server-side code. No plugin or client software is required, and tests run in any browser from IE10 onward. The interface is drawn in SVG, so it adapts to different screen sizes and resolutions.
The code is released under the MIT license. A public instance is available at openspeedtest.com. The author has also launched a companion project, OpenPacketLoss, which detects packet loss from the browser, while OpenSpeedTest itself measures bandwidth.
