LibreSpeed is a very lightweight speed test written in JavaScript that uses XMLHttpRequest and Web Workers, so it needs no Flash, Java or WebSockets. It measures download, upload, ping and jitter and can optionally show IP address, ISP and distance from the server. It is licensed under LGPL-3.0.

Optional features include telemetry, results sharing and multiple points of test, plus a connection stability test with latency charting, loss tracking, threshold alerts and CSV export. All modern browsers are supported, including mobile versions, and an Android client template exists for building an app around your own installation.

To host it yourself you need a reasonably fast web server such as Apache 2, nginx or IIS, with PHP 5.4 or newer or another backend, and a fast internet connection. A database such as MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server or SQLite can optionally store results. Installation means copying the files into the web server's folder and opening the index page.

Key features

  • Download, upload, ping and jitter tests
  • Pure JavaScript with Web Workers
  • Optional IP, ISP and distance display
  • Multiple points of test
  • Connection stability test with CSV export
  • Optional database for stored results

Pricing: Free and open source under the LGPL-3.0 license.

OpenSpeedTest is a free, open-source network performance estimation tool that runs in a web browser. It is written in plain JavaScript and uses only built-in web APIs such as XMLHttpRequest, along with HTML, CSS and SVG, so no third-party frameworks or libraries are needed. The project began in 2011 and moved to its own domain in 2013.

Because it consists only of static HTML, CSS and JavaScript files, a speed test server can be created with a static web server such as Nginx, Apache, IIS or Express, and the project argues this removes concerns about security updates for server-side code. No plugin or client software is required, and tests run in any browser from IE10 onward. The interface is drawn in SVG, so it adapts to different screen sizes and resolutions.

The code is released under the MIT license. A public instance is available at openspeedtest.com. The author has also launched a companion project, OpenPacketLoss, which detects packet loss from the browser, while OpenSpeedTest itself measures bandwidth.

Key features

  • Browser-based network speed test
  • Plain JavaScript with no third-party libraries
  • Runs from static files on any web server
  • Works on any device with a modern browser
  • Responsive SVG user interface

Pricing: Free and open source under the MIT license.
