About Obsidian MCP Server

obsidian-mcp-server is a Model Context Protocol server for working with Obsidian vaults from AI assistants. It can read, write, search and make precise edits to notes, including individual sections, frontmatter and tags, by talking to the Obsidian Local REST API plugin.

It exposes 14 tools and 3 resources, with folder-scoped read and write permissions built in. Tools include reading a note as raw content, a structured form or a single section, listing notes and tags, searching by text, JSONLogic or BM25-ranked Omnisearch results with pagination, and writing or appending to notes. By default it refuses whole-file overwrites of existing notes, and listing and executing Obsidian commands is opt-in through an environment variable.

The server runs either as a stdio process or as a local Streamable HTTP server, is written in TypeScript and published on npm, and is licensed under Apache-2.0. It requires Obsidian with the Local REST API plugin enabled and runs on your own machine.
