About HelixDB
HelixDB is an OLTP graph database built in Rust on object storage. It aims to hold entities, relationships, embeddings and text together in a single transactional engine, so that applications such as retrieval-augmented generation can query graph structure, vectors and keywords from one place rather than stitching several databases together.
Data is modeled as a labeled property graph with typed properties. On top of that it provides approximate nearest-neighbor vector search that can be prefiltered by graph traversal, and BM25 keyword search over node and edge properties. You can query it from Rust, TypeScript, Go or Python. A command-line tool creates projects and starts a local instance, which needs Docker or Podman; data lives in memory by default and a disk option persists it across restarts.
HelixDB is licensed under Apache-2.0. You can run it yourself locally or on your own infrastructure. It suits developers building AI applications, knowledge graphs and recommendation features who want graph and vector retrieval together.

HelixDB: questions and answers
- What is HelixDB used for?
- HelixDB is an open-source graph database written in Rust that combines graph, vector and BM25 full-text search in one transactional engine on object storage. It is a good fit for graph-backed retrieval for RAG apps, knowledge graphs with embeddings, and hybrid graph and keyword search.
- Is HelixDB open source?
- Yes. HelixDB is open source under the Apache-2.0 licence. Its source code is on GitHub at HelixDB/helix-db and is written mainly in Rust.
- Is HelixDB free?
- Yes. HelixDB is open source, so the software itself is free to use.
- Can I self-host HelixDB?
- Yes. HelixDB can be self-hosted on your own server or infrastructure.
- What is HelixDB an alternative to?
- HelixDB is an open-source alternative to Amazon Neptune. Other open-source alternatives to Amazon Neptune include Dgraph, Neo4j and ArangoDB.
- Is HelixDB actively maintained?
- Yes. The most recent commit to HelixDB was on 2 October 2026, and the latest release is v3.4.1, published on 30 September 2026. The project has 6.1k stars on GitHub.
