About Amazon ECS
Amazon Elastic Container Service is a fully managed container service from AWS. It runs and scales containerized applications and is described by the vendor as easy to use, scalable, secure and reliable.
As an AWS-native orchestrator, ECS works with other AWS services for networking, identity, monitoring and image storage, and containers can run on managed servers or on AWS Fargate, the serverless compute engine for containers. Teams define how containers should run and let the service handle scheduling and placement, which avoids operating a separate orchestrator control plane.
Amazon ECS is a proprietary, cloud-only service. Pricing is covered on AWS's ECS pricing page, and costs depend on the underlying resources used.

Amazon ECS: questions and answers
- What is Amazon ECS used for?
- Amazon ECS is AWS's managed container orchestration service for deploying and scaling containerized applications without running your own control plane. It is a good fit for deploying microservices on AWS, running containerized batch jobs and avoiding Kubernetes operations overhead.
- How much does Amazon ECS cost?
- Amazon ECS is a paid product with no free plan. Pay-as-you-go compute billed per second. On Fargate in US East, Linux/X86 costs $0.000011244 per vCPU second plus memory and storage charges; Managed Instances add a per-instance fee to EC2 prices.
- Is Amazon ECS open source?
- No. Amazon ECS is proprietary (closed-source) software and can't be self-hosted. Open-source alternatives to Amazon ECS include Kubernetes, K3s and Rancher.
- What are some alternatives to Amazon ECS?
- Amazon ECS competes with Amazon EKS, Azure Container Apps and Google Cloud Run. For open-source options, see Enlisted's ranked list of open-source Amazon ECS alternatives.
