About WebLLM Chat

WebLLM Chat is a chat interface that runs large language models locally in the browser through WebGPU acceleration. Because inference happens on your own hardware, conversations never leave your computer, and no server-side processing or cloud service is needed. It combines the WebLLM engine with the user interface of NextChat and is part of the MLC.ai family of projects. It is aimed at people who want private AI chat without handing data to a provider.

After the initial model download, it can run fully offline. It supports vision models, so you can upload images and ask questions about them, and offers markdown rendering, dark mode and a responsive layout. You can also connect to custom models in your local environment through MLC-LLM, and the open-source framework can be customized to build your own AI applications.

A hosted copy of the app is available at chat.webllm.ai, and the code is written in TypeScript with Next.js under Apache-2.0. Performance depends on your device's GPU and browser WebGPU support, so check compatibility before relying on it.
