About WebChat

WebChat is a decentralized browser extension that lets people visiting the same website chat anonymously. It uses WebRTC for end-to-end encrypted peer-to-peer communication, so there is no central chat server and messages stay on users' devices. It is released under the MIT license.

After installation, a ghost icon appears in the bottom-right corner of each site. Selecting it joins the chat room for that site, turning any web page into a shared space for the people already there. The extension is available from the Chrome Web Store, Microsoft Edge Add-ons, and Firefox Add-ons, and there is a Discord community.

Because there is no server, the project avoids account creation and data collection, though the experience depends on other people being on the same site at the same time. It is aimed at privacy-minded users who want casual conversation with fellow visitors, and at developers interested in WebRTC-based decentralized apps.
