About Tool in the Cockpit
Tool in the Cockpit is an iOS app that helps helicopter pilots with preflight and in-flight calculations. It was built by a commercial helicopter pilot and covers the Robinson R22, R44 and R66, Eurocopter AS350 and H125, EC120, EC130, Bell 206 and 407, and AW119. Weight and balance covers the Bell 407, EC120, EC130 and AW119 as well as the R22, R44, R66, AS350 B2 and H125 B3+, and sheets can be signed, saved and emailed.
The in-flight screen shows relative wind, hover ceilings, density altitude, power limits and Vne. HIGE and HOGE hover ceiling charts are included, along with warning light references taken from the pilot's operating handbook. METARs and TAFs can be fetched by entering airport codes, fuel and weight appear in kilograms, pounds, liters, gallons and percent, and an offline converter handles aviation units. Nav logs can be generated as PDFs, and later versions added route weather maps.
The app is free to download with in-app purchases. The R22 and AS350 are always free, while the R44, R66 and other helicopters need a free trial and then an unlock for full capability. It runs on both iPhone and iPad, and the developer says it lets pilots recalculate performance or weight and balance in the cockpit without switching apps or consulting paper charts.
