About Macai

Macai is a native macOS application for chatting with large language models. Instead of tying you to one vendor, it works with most AI providers, including ChatGPT, Claude, xAI Grok, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Ollama and OpenRouter, as well as almost any service that exposes an OpenAI-compatible API. It is written in Swift and aimed at Mac users who want one tidy interface for several models.

The app supports vision input, image generation, search, reasoning models, and import and export of chats. Settings, messages and chats can be kept in sync across devices through iCloud. The README states that macai itself collects no telemetry or usage tracking, though Apple may gather anonymized telemetry when iCloud Sync is turned on. For commercial providers you supply your own API token; local models can be run through Ollama.

Macai is released under the Apache-2.0 license. You can download a universal binary notarized by Apple, install it with Homebrew using a cask, or build it from source. The interface is minimalist, with light and dark modes. It is a client you run on your own Mac rather than a hosted service.
