About BookWyrm

BookWyrm is a social network for tracking your reading, discussing books, writing reviews and finding what to read next. It is built on ActivityPub, so separate BookWyrm servers can connect with one another and with other federated services such as Mastodon and Pleroma. It is not mainly a cataloguing tool, though it does catalogue books to some degree.

Federation lets small communities run their own instances. You could host one for a book club and still follow a friend on a server devoted to a niche genre, and a Mastodon user can read and comment on a review you post. Each instance chooses which others to federate with and moderates itself, in contrast to a single large service like Goodreads.

The software is written in Python, and topics reference Open Library as a data source. The maintainers welcome participation at any experience level but ask contributors not to submit AI-generated code or content. Links to the project homepage, support and documentation are in the README, and a guide to running your own social server is recommended reading.
