Open Library is an open, editable library catalog run by the Internet Archive, with the goal of having a web page for every book ever published. This repository holds the code behind the openlibrary.org website, which is operated as a public service rather than something most people install themselves.

On the site, visitors can search and browse by subject, view trending titles, explore virtual shelves in Library Explorer, search inside the text of books, and borrow books online through Controlled Digital Lending. Readers can keep a reading log, create lists, set yearly reading goals and browse collections such as a K-12 student library. Anyone can contribute by adding books, correcting records or volunteering as an Open Librarian, and a Developer Center covers the API.

The software is written in Python and released under the AGPL-3.0 licence, and the interface is available in many languages. The project is nonprofit and accepts donations.

Key features

  • Searchable catalog of books
  • Borrowing through Controlled Digital Lending
  • Full-text search inside books
  • Reading log, lists and yearly goals
  • Library Explorer virtual shelves
  • Community editing of book records

Pricing: Free to use at openlibrary.org; the code is open source under AGPL-3.0 and the service accepts donations.

Ryot, short for Roll Your Own Tracker, is a self-hosted application for logging what you consume and do in daily life. It focuses on two areas: media such as books, shows, games and podcasts, and fitness activity such as workouts and body measurements. Running it on your own server means you keep ownership of the data.

On the media side it tracks movies, TV shows, anime, manga, books, audiobooks, podcasts, music and video games, and it can import your history from services such as Goodreads, Trakt and MyAnimeList. Integrations with Jellyfin, Plex, Kodi and Emby can record what you watch automatically. For fitness, it offers an exercise database, workout logging, body measurement tracking and progress graphs.

On the technical side it supports OpenID Connect sign-in, notifications through Discord, Ntfy and Apprise, a GraphQL API for custom integrations and installable PWA use on mobile. It is licensed under GPL-3.0 and starts from a Docker Compose setup. An optional Pro version adds extras such as profile sharing and personalized recommendations, and a public demo resets its data daily.

Key features

  • Tracks movies, shows, anime, manga, books and games
  • Workout logging with an exercise database
  • Body measurement tracking with progress graphs
  • Imports from Goodreads, Trakt and MyAnimeList
  • Automatic tracking via Jellyfin, Plex, Kodi and Emby
  • OpenID Connect authentication
  • GraphQL API for custom integrations

Pricing: Free and open source under GPL-3.0; an optional Pro version adds extra features.

Yamtrack is a self-hosted tracker for the media you watch, read and play. It covers movies, TV shows, anime, manga, video games, books, comics and board games in a single application. For each entry you can record a score, status, progress, repeats such as rewatches or rereads, start and end dates, and a free-text note.

TV shows can be tracked season by season and episode by episode, and a tracking history keeps a log of every action taken on an item. You can create custom entries for niche media that the supported data sources do not list, build personal lists, and invite other members to collaborate on them. A calendar of upcoming releases can be subscribed to in other apps through an iCalendar URL, and notifications go out through Apprise to services such as Discord, Telegram, ntfy, Slack or email.

Setup is done with Docker Compose using either SQLite or PostgreSQL. Multiple user accounts are supported, with OpenID Connect and many social login providers available through django-allauth. Integrations with Jellyfin, Plex and Emby track what you watch, and you can import from Trakt, Simkl, MyAnimeList, AniList and Kitsu or export everything to CSV. It is built with Django and licensed under AGPL-3.0.

Key features

  • Tracks movies, TV, anime, manga, games, books and comics
  • Season and episode level tracking for shows
  • Custom entries for niche media
  • Shared personal lists with collaborators
  • Release calendar with iCalendar subscription
  • Notifications through Apprise
  • Imports from Trakt, MyAnimeList, AniList and Kitsu
  • CSV export and import
