About Amazon Athena

Amazon Athena is a serverless, interactive analytics service from AWS. It lets users run SQL queries directly against data stored in Amazon S3, so data can be analyzed where it already lives instead of being loaded into a separate warehouse first.

Because Athena is serverless, there is no infrastructure to set up or manage, and queries are written in standard SQL. It is commonly used for log analysis, ad hoc exploration of data lakes and as a query layer for reports and data pipelines. AWS describes it as handling very large datasets.

Athena is a proprietary AWS service and cannot be self-hosted. Pricing is usage based and is described on the service's pricing page.
