About Google BigQuery

Google BigQuery is a managed data warehouse on Google Cloud. It is built so that teams can store large volumes of structured and semi-structured data and query it with standard SQL, without provisioning servers, tuning clusters or planning capacity in advance.

Storage and compute are handled by the service and scale independently. Data can be loaded in batches or streamed in, queried alongside external sources, and connected to dashboards and notebooks. Machine learning models can also be trained and run with SQL statements inside the warehouse. It is a commercial, hosted product that runs only on Google Cloud and suits analytics teams already working in that ecosystem.

Key features

  • Serverless SQL analytics with no clusters to manage
  • Batch loading and streaming ingestion
  • Built-in machine learning through SQL statements
  • Queries over external data sources
  • Fine-grained access control through Google Cloud IAM
  • Integrations with BI tools and notebooks

Good fit for

  • →Central analytics warehouse for product and marketing data
  • →Ad hoc SQL analysis over large event logs
  • →Reporting backends for BI dashboards
