Production scheduling software for manufacturing: MRPeasy, Katana, Fulcrum, Global Shop Solutions, ERPNext and Odoo compared, with the full ERPs flagged.

By , founder of NQM Studio LTDUpdated 10 min read

The best production scheduling software for manufacturing depends on how you make things. MRPeasy and Katana suit small makers who want materials, stock and production orders in one place. Fulcrum and Global Shop Solutions suit job shops that build to order, and ERPNext and Odoo are open-source ERPs with manufacturing modules you can host yourself.

Most tools here are MRP or ERP suites rather than standalone schedulers, so each pick says which it is. Picks are grouped by the kind of operation, and the live table shows pricing model, licence and self-hosting for each.

Live data from Enlisted: GitHub stats sync daily; pricing comes from each vendor's pricing page. “Vendor edition” means closed source, with a version the vendor lets you run on your own servers.

How we picked

Enlisted looked for tools whose own descriptions name manufacturers, production planning, work orders, shop floor scheduling or capacity. Tools that only do inventory counting, maintenance or generic calendars are covered briefly at the end. Where a product is a full ERP with finance, purchasing and more, the section says so, because that decides how big the project is. Open-source tools show recent GitHub activity on their cards. The method is in how Enlisted ranks tools, and the ERP category lists the wider field.

What counts as production scheduling software?

Three kinds of product turn up under this search. MRP software works out what to buy and what to make from orders and bills of materials. Production schedulers put jobs onto machines, work centers and time slots, and move them when something slips. ERP suites wrap both inside accounting, purchasing, sales and inventory. Small manufacturers often start with MRP, because it answers "what do I need to buy this week", and add finer scheduling later or choose an ERP that includes it.

Few standalone production schedulers turned up in Enlisted's matches, so this guide covers MRP and ERP products and calls out the ones with scheduling tools of their own. If your main need is stock, see the planned inventory management guide for manufacturing.

Best for small manufacturers that want MRP and production planning

1. MRPeasy: best cloud MRP for small manufacturers

MRPeasy is cloud MRP and ERP software for small manufacturers, covering production planning, inventory, purchasing, CRM and finances. Its own pages describe balancing materials and capacity against demand and making it easy to reschedule production orders, and it says users can promise an accurate lead time when quoting.

Inventory features include lot and batch tracking and purchase requirements, and it connects to QuickBooks Online, Xero, Shopify, WooCommerce, Salesforce and other tools. See the MRPeasy page.

  • Best for: small manufacturers moving off spreadsheets that want planning, stock and purchasing in one system.
  • Watch out for: it is paid per user with a trial and no free plan, hosted only and closed source.

2. Katana: best for product makers who sell through online channels

Katana is cloud inventory management and manufacturing software for small product makers, with real-time stock, production and order tracking. Its pages describe tracking work orders and keeping them on schedule, a live view of materials and what needs buying, and demand forecasting.

It integrates with Shopify, Amazon, QuickBooks Online, Xero, WooCommerce and others, and supports batch and serial traceability. Enlisted lists a free plan limited by SKU count, with paid plans for unlimited SKUs. See the Katana page.

  • Best for: makers of physical products who sell on Shopify or marketplaces and need materials and work orders tied to orders.
  • Watch out for: Enlisted's data does not list machine-level or finite-capacity scheduling, so confirm what planning views you get before relying on it for a busy shop floor.

3. Fishbowl: best for QuickBooks and Xero users outgrowing basic inventory features

Fishbowl is inventory management and manufacturing software that works with QuickBooks and Xero, with warehousing and ecommerce options. Its line includes Fishbowl Manufacturing, a cloud-hosted inventory, warehousing and manufacturing product, and an AI manufacturing offering that the vendor says helps with production preparation and catching shortages.

It targets small and mid-sized businesses that need stronger stock control and production than their accounting software provides. Enlisted lists tiered paid plans, with the manufacturing platform priced separately by users and deployment, and no free plan or trial. Enlisted also notes a self-managed edition alongside the hosted one. See the Fishbowl page.

  • Best for: companies that keep their books in QuickBooks or Xero and want production and warehousing tied to them.
  • Watch out for: it is inventory-first and closed source, so check how deep its production scheduling goes, and note that the manufacturing platform is priced separately from the inventory plans.

Another inventory-and-MRP option is Megaventory, cloud software for small manufacturers and distributors with order management and basic production planning, though Enlisted could not read its site and marks features as unconfirmed. See the QuickBooks alternatives guide if the accounting side is also in question.

Best for job shops and make-to-order manufacturers

Job shops quote custom work, route each job through machines and need to know what each job costs. Their software is built around jobs, routings and quotes, not stock replenishment.

4. Fulcrum: best cloud manufacturing software for CNC and sheet metal shops

Fulcrum is cloud manufacturing software for CNC shops and sheet metal fabricators, combining job tracking, scheduling, inventory, quality and finance. Its product pages list job tracking with live labor and materials, autoscheduling, grouped work for nesting, bills of material and routing, quoting and sales orders, and purchase planning.

It also lists quality control readiness for AS9100D and ISO 9001, plus an API. Pricing is by quote. See the Fulcrum page.

  • Best for: precision CNC and sheet metal shops replacing spreadsheets or an older ERP.
  • Watch out for: pricing is not published, and its focus on those trades means a loose fit for process or batch manufacturing.

5. Global Shop Solutions: best full ERP for job shops with cloud or on-premise options

Global Shop Solutions is ERP software for job shops and discrete manufacturers, covering the path from quote to cash: estimating, planning and scheduling, production, inventory, shipping and accounting. Modules include shop floor data collection, routing, quality control, preventive maintenance, bills of material and job costing.

It is offered as cloud, on-premise or government-focused deployments, with consulting, training and implementation services. Pricing is tailored per company on a concurrent-user model. See the Global Shop Solutions listing.

  • Best for: established job shops that want one system from quote to invoice and may need on-premise hosting.
  • Watch out for: it is a full ERP with a long module list and no published pricing, so expect an implementation project.

JobBOSS from ECI Solutions is another ERP for job shops and make-to-order manufacturers, listed with quoting, job tracking and scheduling tools. Enlisted could not read its vendor page, so features are unconfirmed.

Best full ERPs with manufacturing and scheduling

If you want accounting, purchasing and production in one system, these are the full ERPs on the list. They take longer to set up than an MRP tool.

6. Deskera: best cloud ERP and MRP bundle for small and growing makers

Deskera is cloud ERP and MRP software that combines accounting, inventory, CRM, payroll and HR for small and growing businesses. Deskera MRP adds planning for materials, resources and machines for in-house and contract manufacturing, and industry pages cover metal fabrication, electronics, machinery, food and beverage and others.

Enlisted lists per-user pricing with a minimum number of users and a separate implementation fee. See the Deskera page.

  • Best for: small manufacturers replacing QuickBooks or spreadsheets with one ERP that includes accounting and payroll.
  • Watch out for: the per-user minimum and implementation fee make it a larger commitment than an MRP-only tool.

7. Plex Systems: best cloud MES and ERP for plants that need shop floor data

Plex Systems is Rockwell Automation's cloud manufacturing platform combining MES, ERP, quality management and production monitoring as multi-tenant SaaS. Its product line lists a finite scheduler for production planning and a connected-worker application, alongside shop floor tracking.

Pricing is by quote, and the platform spans MES, ERP, quality and monitoring. See the Plex Systems entry.

  • Best for: plants that want shop floor execution, quality and ERP on one cloud platform.
  • Watch out for: the scope is wide and pricing is quote-only, so a small shop should check that it needs the whole platform.

8. SYSPRO: best ERP for mid-sized manufacturers that need MRP and traceability

SYSPRO is an ERP suite for manufacturers and distributors, covering finance, manufacturing, supply chain and inventory, with cloud options. Its manufacturing area lists bills of material, work in progress, MRP, a product configurator, quality and engineering change control, and its supply chain area includes lot traceability.

Pricing is by quote. See the SYSPRO page. For other big-vendor options, the NetSuite alternatives guide covers cloud ERPs for growing companies.

  • Best for: mid-sized manufacturers and distributors that need MRP, finance and lot traceability together.
  • Watch out for: it is a full ERP sold by quote, so it suits companies ready for an implementation project.

Best open-source options for manufacturing scheduling

Open-source ERPs have no licence fee for the software, but you pay in setup time, hosting and maintenance, or in a vendor's cloud plan.

9. ERPNext: best open-source ERP with work orders and capacity planning

ERPNext is a free, open-source ERP built on the Frappe framework, covering accounting, inventory, orders, manufacturing, assets and projects in one system. It is GPL-3.0 and written in Python.

The vendor's documentation describes a production plan tool, work orders that trigger raw material transfers, job cards for operations at each workstation, and capacity planning that tracks workloads per workstation to schedule future jobs. It can be self-hosted, and a cloud service is also offered. See the ERPNext page and the capacity planning docs.

  • Best for: small and mid-sized manufacturers with technical help who want a full ERP without licence fees.
  • Watch out for: it is a broad system, so expect configuration work, and self-hosting means you maintain it.

10. Odoo: best modular open-source business suite with a manufacturing app

Odoo is a bundle of browser-based, open-source business applications covering sales, inventory, manufacturing, accounting, projects, HR and more, usable alone or together as an ERP. Its manufacturing pages describe finite capacity planning, work centers, and drag-and-drop rescheduling in Kanban and Gantt views. See the Odoo manufacturing app.

Enlisted lists a free option for one app with unlimited users, with paid plans priced per user, and says on-premise hosting is allowed on the higher plan. GitHub lists the licence as "Other", so read the repository terms, and confirm which edition includes the planning views you need. See the Odoo page.

  • Best for: companies that want to start with one app and add modules as they grow.
  • Watch out for: per-user pricing adds up as more staff need access, and features can differ by edition.

Dolibarr is a lighter GPL-3.0 ERP and CRM whose module list includes manufacturing, though Enlisted's data does not list scheduling features, so check its documentation first. InvenTree is an MIT-licensed system for stock control and part tracking with a REST API, which suits makers who need parts and stock under control but not a scheduler.

  • Maintenance scheduling: Atlas CMMS is an AGPL-3.0, self-hostable maintenance system for work orders, preventive maintenance and assets, and OpexMX is a maintenance management system for manufacturers with a technician workload planner.
  • People and equipment booking: Resource Guru schedules people, equipment and rooms with capacity planning, and its listed features cover bookings and timesheets rather than bills of materials or production orders.
  • Meetings and appointments: the free scheduling software guide covers calendars and booking tools, not production.

What should a manufacturer check before buying?

Two requirements decide most choices.

How the tool schedules. Some products list work orders and statuses, others place jobs on work centers with capacity limits, and the finer ones reschedule automatically when a job slips. Ask to see a rescheduling scenario: a late material delivery, a machine down for a day, a rush order. MRPeasy, Fulcrum and Odoo describe rescheduling or autoscheduling on their own pages, and ERPNext describes capacity planning per workstation, but how well each handles your case is something to check in a demo or trial.

How big the project is. MRP and inventory tools such as MRPeasy, Katana and Fishbowl connect to accounting software, so you keep your books where they are. Full ERPs replace accounting too, which brings more value but means data migration, training and often an implementation partner. Pricing models also differ widely: per user, by SKU count, by concurrent users or by quote.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best production scheduling software for small manufacturers?
MRPeasy and Katana are built for small manufacturers and combine inventory with production planning and work orders. Fulcrum and Global Shop Solutions suit job shops that build to order, and ERPNext and Odoo are open-source ERPs you can host yourself. The right choice depends on whether you make to stock or to order and whether you want a full ERP.
Is MRP the same as production scheduling?
Not exactly. MRP works out which materials to buy and which orders to make from demand and bills of materials, while scheduling decides when and on which machine or work center each job runs. Many products combine both, and some, such as Fulcrum and Plex Systems, list scheduling tools of their own. Check how a tool handles machine capacity, not only material needs.
Is there free or open-source production scheduling software?
ERPNext is a GPL-3.0 open-source ERP whose manufacturing module covers work orders, workstations and capacity planning, and it is free to self-host. Odoo is open source with a free tier for one app, and Katana has a free plan limited by SKU count. Self-hosting means you handle installation, backups and updates.
Do I need a full ERP to schedule production?
No. Katana, MRPeasy and Fishbowl focus on inventory, orders and production and connect to accounting software, so you can keep your books where they are. A full ERP such as ERPNext, Odoo, Deskera, SYSPRO or Global Shop Solutions adds accounting, purchasing and other functions, which helps if you want one system but takes longer to set up.
What should a manufacturer check before buying scheduling software?
Check whether it schedules by machine or work center capacity or only lists work orders, how it reschedules when a job slips, and whether the shop floor can report progress back. Also confirm the pricing model, since some tools charge per user, some are quote-only, and some limit you by SKU count.
