About Ungoogled Chromium
ungoogled-chromium is a version of Chromium with its dependency on Google web services removed. Its objectives, in priority order, are to drop that dependency, to stay as close as possible to the default Chromium experience as a drop-in replacement, and to add tweaks for privacy, control and transparency. Most of those tweaks must be turned on manually. The tooling is written in Python and published under the BSD-3-Clause license.
The project argues that Chromium behaves well on security and privacy when signed out but still depends on Google web services and binaries, and trades away transparency for ease of use. To address this it removes background requests to web services at build and run time, strips code specific to Google services, and replaces pre-made binaries in the source with user-provided alternatives when possible. The documentation includes a feature overview, downloads, an FAQ, build instructions and design notes.
