About Photo Widget

Material Photo Widget is an Android app that puts your favorite photos on the home screen as widgets. It is described as simple, free, open source and free of ads, aimed at people who want to personalize their phone with their own pictures rather than use a preset gallery app. The project is licensed under Apache-2.0.

You can choose photos one by one or sync a widget with folders on the device. A slideshow can switch photos at an interval or on a schedule. Each widget can also act as a shortcut, with a tap action that opens the photo full screen, launches another app, or opens a URL. Appearance options include borders, opacity, saturation, brightness, offset and padding, six formats (Shapes, Square, Tall, Wide, Original and Fill) and 28 different shapes.

The app is built with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose using Material 3 Expressive, and the author calls it a playground for studying modern Android development. It can be installed from Google Play, IzzyOnDroid or GitHub, and translations are handled through Crowdin. Bug reports and feature requests are welcome through the repository templates.
