About Overcast

Overcast is a podcast app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, developed by a single independent developer rather than a large company. It is built around audio features that help people listen to talk shows efficiently, and it plays podcasts from the open directory of public RSS feeds.

Smart Speed dynamically shortens silences in talk shows so that listeners gain time without distorted audio, and Voice Boost raises and normalizes volume so quiet and loud speakers sound consistent, even in noisy places like cars. The app is largely free and funded by small banner-style ads, while an annual subscription unlocks bonus features and can remove the ads.

Overcast is proprietary software distributed as an iOS app, with no self-hosting involved. Podcasters do not need a separate account: shows added to Apple Podcasts appear in Overcast, and downloads go directly to the podcaster's own servers.
