About OpenSSE

OpenSSE, short for Open Sketch Search Engine, is an open-source C++ project for retrieving 3D objects using a sketch image as the query. The author built it out of interest in Mathias Eitz's 2012 SIGGRAPH work on sketch-based retrieval. It aims to show how such a search engine works rather than to be a production service.

Although 3D meshes are the main target, the README says it can retrieve images, videos, point cloud models and volume models too, provided you can produce line drawings of them. Two demos are described: a sketch search over 3D mesh models and a sketch recognition tool with a web version. To keep the code easy to follow, it uses a single thread and plain ASCII files for storage.

OpenSSE depends on OpenCV 3.0 or newer and is compiled and installed from source. The README states it is licensed under Apache 2.0, although the repository metadata lists the license as Other. Planned work includes sketch recognition, faster training steps and support for large image sets, and further detail is on the project wiki.
