About Monocle
Monocle is a personal, universal search engine built by its creator to search across their own blog posts, journal entries, notes, tweets, contacts and more, effectively acting as an extended personal memory. It was built specifically around the particulars of its creator's own data and workflow, so it is explicitly not designed to work out of the box for other people's data.
The entire system, including the ingest and indexing pipeline, the web server, and the client web app, is written in the Ink programming language, with the client interface built using the Torus UI library the same author created. The project implements its own full-text search algorithm from scratch, which the author describes as a learning exercise in how such systems work rather than an attempt at cutting-edge search quality, prioritizing fast time-to-first-result and effective recall over sophistication.
Monocle is released under the MIT license, and a public demo is available indexing a subset of the author's own data. Because it is tightly coupled to one person's personal data pipeline, it is best understood as a case study in building a personal search tool rather than software meant for general reuse.
