About Houdini

Houdini is 3D software from SideFX built around a procedural approach, in which scenes and effects are described as networks of operations that can be changed and re-run. SideFX says this lets artists iterate freely and share workflows with colleagues, and it is widely used for film, television and games.

The product line includes Houdini FX, which provides tools for simulating fluids, destruction, pyro, grains and cloth, and Houdini CORE for modeling, lighting and rigging work. Houdini Engine brings Houdini assets into other applications, Karma is its renderer, and SideFX lists areas such as world building, characters, lookdev and synthetic data for AI and machine learning. A free Apprentice version is offered for learning.

Houdini is commercial software installed locally, not a hosted or self-hosted service, with commercial, indie and education licensing. It suits VFX artists, technical directors, game developers and motion graphics designers.
