About Excel MCP Server

Excel MCP Server is a Model Context Protocol server that gives AI assistants the ability to work with Excel files. It can create, read and edit workbooks, and it does this without Microsoft Excel being installed on the machine, so it also works on servers and in containers. It is written in Python.

The tool set covers reading and writing cell values, formulas and dates, with paging through big sheets and a search function, formatting for typefaces, fills, borders, numeric formats, column widths and frozen panes, and structuring of worksheets, including rows, columns, merged ranges, tables, charts and summary tables. It also handles conditional formatting and data validation, and can read the VBA code in macro-enabled workbooks module by module, read-only, without ever running it. Safety options include folder confinement, a formula safety check and a read-only mode, and it supports stdio, SSE and streamable HTTP transports.

The server is MIT-licensed and runs locally or on your own host, connected to any MCP-capable client. It suits analysts and developers automating spreadsheet tasks with AI, particularly where Excel itself is unavailable.
