About BookBoy

BookBoy is a macOS app that turns PDF books into spoken audio without sending files to the cloud. It builds a reading map that finds chapters and lets you choose pages, and it recognizes scanned pages with on-device OCR when a page has no embedded text.

Before anything is spoken you can compare the PDF with the narration script and fix words without altering the original file. Playback starts on the current page while the next one is prepared, so you do not wait for the whole book. The player includes 15-second skips, speed control, a sleep timer, media keys and Now Playing support, and the reading view keeps bookmarks, highlights and notes. A finished book can be exported as an M4B.

You can use a default voice or your own, including a recording of a loved one. The site advertises a pay-once model with no subscription, though the price is not given in the available text.
