About Archon
Archon is an open-source workflow engine for AI coding agents, described as a harness builder. You define a development process, such as planning, implementation, validation, code review and pull request creation, as a YAML workflow, and Archon runs it reliably across your projects. The project likens itself to Dockerfiles for infrastructure and GitHub Actions for CI, applied to AI coding.
The motivation is that asking an agent to fix a bug yields different results depending on the model's whims: it may skip planning, forget tests or ignore your PR template. In Archon, the workflow fixes the phases, checkpoints and outputs, and the AI supplies intelligence at each step within a structure that you own and that stays deterministic. Runs are repeatable, and each run gets its own isolated git worktree. Topics mention Claude and a CLI.
Archon is written in TypeScript on Bun and licensed under MIT. It runs on your own machine alongside the coding agents you already use, so there is nothing to host. It suits developers and teams who want consistent, auditable behavior from AI coding tools rather than ad hoc prompts.

Archon: questions and answers
- What is Archon used for?
- Archon is a workflow engine for AI coding agents that encodes development processes as YAML workflows, making AI-assisted coding repeatable and isolated per run. It is a good fit for making AI-assisted coding consistent; automating plan, code and review pipelines; and standardizing agent behavior across repositories.
- Is Archon open source?
- Yes. Archon is open source under the MIT licence. Its source code is on GitHub at coleam00/Archon and is written mainly in TypeScript.
- Is Archon free?
- Yes. Archon is open source, so the software itself is free to use.
- What are some alternatives to Archon?
- Similar open-source tools in the AI Tools category include OpenHands, OpenCode and oh-my-claudecode. SaaS products in the same category include AI Dev, Aldena and Augment Code.
- Is Archon actively maintained?
- Yes. The most recent commit to Archon was on 2 October 2026, and the latest release is v0.11.1, published on 25 September 2026. The project has 24k stars on GitHub.
