About Amazon Cognito

Amazon Cognito is an Amazon Web Services product for customer identity in applications. It offers user pools that store users and handle sign-up and sign-in, and identity federation that lets people log in through outside providers and receive temporary credentials to AWS resources.

Cognito is a proprietary AWS service with no self-hosted edition and is billed on usage. AWS documents the supported sign-in methods, limits and pricing, and it is commonly chosen by teams that already build on AWS and want authentication for web and mobile apps without running their own identity server.

Key features

  • User pools for sign-up and sign-in
  • Identity federation with outside providers
  • Temporary credentials for AWS resources
  • Integration with AWS services
  • Billing based on usage

Good fit for

  • →Adding login to a serverless app on AWS
  • →Letting mobile users access AWS resources
