LibreTranslate is a machine translation API that you can run entirely on your own server. Unlike hosted translation APIs, it does not depend on proprietary services such as Google or Azure. Its translation engine is the open-source Argos Translate library, and the project is licensed under AGPL-3.0.

It provides a web interface for translating text and files, along with an API documented on the site. The homepage lists languages including Basque, Chinese, English, French, German, Irish, Japanese, Russian and Spanish, among others. The software can work offline and is designed to be set up in a few minutes.

A hosted instance is available at libretranslate.com, with an option to obtain an API key, while developers who prefer control over their data can download the software and run their own API server. It is written in Python, and a Quickstart guide and community resources explain deployment.

Key features

  • Self-hosted machine translation API
  • Offline-capable translation engine
  • Text and file translation
  • Powered by open-source Argos Translate
  • Web interface and API documentation
  • Optional API keys

Pricing: Free to download and self-host under AGPL-3.0; an API key is available for the hosted service.

LanguageTool is open-source proofreading software that finds grammar and style errors a simple spell checker would miss. It supports English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Polish, Dutch and more than 20 other languages. The core is written in Java and freely available under the LGPL 2.1 or later.

It can be used in several ways. The project documents how to run your own LanguageTool server, an HTTP API for sending text to a server, a public server that can be used over HTTP, and a Java API with Javadoc. Error detection works through rules, and the development overview explains how to contribute new rules for a language.

Community-contributed Docker files are listed for people who want to run a containerized server. Building from source needs Java 17 and Apache Maven, and the README offers a scripted install as well as a shallow clone option to reduce download size, since a complete clone is large. A forum is available for questions.

Key features

  • Grammar and style checking
  • Support for 25+ languages
  • HTTP API for integrations
  • Run your own LanguageTool server
  • Java API with Javadoc
  • Community Docker images

Pricing: A free Basic tier checks up to 2,000 characters per field. Premium raises that to 150,000 and adds extra checks and AI rephrasing; its price is not shown in the page text.

Argos Translate is an open-source offline translation library written in Python. It uses OpenNMT for translation and can be used as a Python library, from the command line or through a graphical application. Because models run locally, text can be translated without sending it to an online service. The code is licensed under MIT.

Translation relies on installable language packages, which are zip archives with the .argosmodel extension that contain the data for a language pair. A package index with pre-trained models is maintained in a separate repository. When no direct model exists, Argos Translate can pivot through an intermediate language: with Spanish to English and English to French installed, Spanish to French works too, at some cost in quality.

Supported languages include Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Turkish and Ukrainian, among others, and users can request more. The library is on PyPI and installs with pip. LibreTranslate, a separate web app and API, is built on top of Argos Translate, which is how many people encounter it.

Key features

  • Offline translation with local models
  • Python library, CLI and GUI
  • Installable language model packages
  • Automatic pivoting through intermediate languages
  • Package index of pre-trained models
  • Foundation for the LibreTranslate API

Pricing: Free and open source under the MIT license.
