MCP Toolbox for Databases is a Model Context Protocol server, open source, that links AI agents, IDEs and applications to your databases. It is developed in the googleapis organization, written in Go, and was renamed from genai-toolbox to mcp-toolbox, so older remotes may need updating.
The project serves two purposes. At build time it is a ready-to-use MCP server: you can connect clients such as Gemini CLI, Claude Code or Codex to databases with prebuilt generic tools, then explore schemas, talk to your data and generate code without writing boilerplate. At run time it is a framework for building specialized, secure tools for production agents, where you define structured queries, semantic search and natural-language-to-SQL capabilities. Topics list many supported databases, including BigQuery, Elasticsearch, Firestore, MongoDB, MySQL and Oracle.
The toolbox is Apache-2.0 licensed and runs on infrastructure you control, with full documentation on its website. It suits developers and platform teams that want governed, database-aware tools for AI agents instead of letting agents connect to databases ad hoc.
