About GitHub Actions
GitHub Actions is the automation feature of GitHub, used to build, package, release and deploy projects in any language, on GitHub or on an external system, without developers having to run build servers themselves. Workflows are defined in files inside the repository and run in response to events such as pushes and pull requests.
It sits within GitHub's wider developer platform, which also includes Copilot, Codespaces, Issues, code review, code quality tools and application security products such as Advanced Security and secret protection. Actions workflows can use reusable steps from the GitHub Marketplace. Runs happen on GitHub-hosted machines, and organizations can also attach their own self-hosted runners.
GitHub Actions is proprietary software, offered as part of GitHub's cloud service and in GitHub Enterprise Server for self-managed installations, with a pricing page that explains free and paid usage. It suits development teams who want continuous integration and deployment close to their code.
